Requests, chat and WhatsApp: how to involve listeners in your show

By Streamtoppers.nl2 min read

Radio really comes alive when listeners take part. A request with a shout-out, a conversation in the chat or a WhatsApp message: it turns listeners into fans. Here is how to approach it, without the DJ drowning in messages.

Requests: two approaches

There are two kinds of request lines:

  • From your library. Listeners choose a song from your music library and the AutoDJ puts it in the queue. That works even when nobody is live. Streaming panels like AzuraCast offer this.
  • A form for the live DJ. Listeners type a title, artist and shout-out. The DJ sees the request on screen and decides whether and when to play it.

Many stations combine the two: requests from the library when nobody is live, and the form during live shows.

Rules that work

  • Not the same song over and over. Make sure a song that has just been played cannot be requested again for a while.
  • A maximum per listener. For example three requests per hour, so everyone gets a chance.
  • Protection against spam. A simple check question or hidden field keeps robots out.
  • Clear expectations. Show whether the request line is open, and that the DJ cannot play every request.

A chat on your site

In a chat, listeners talk with the DJ and with each other. That gives your station a community feeling. Keep in mind:

  • give DJs and moderators a recognisable label;
  • make sure they can delete messages and block annoying visitors;
  • keep links and swear words out of the chat with a filter.

WhatsApp

Many listeners prefer to send a message. You can put a button on your site that opens WhatsApp with a prepared message, such as "Request: ". Even handier is an integration in which messages automatically appear in the DJ's request list, with an automatic reply. Then the DJ does not have to keep an eye on their phone during the show.

Rewards work

Mention names on air, give shout-outs and thank people for their requests. Going a step further? With a fan club, listeners collect points for chatting, requesting and voting. A leaderboard on the site turns it into a game.

Keep it workable for the DJ

A DJ also has to play music and talk. So put requests, chat and announcements on one screen, newest on top, and let the DJ tick off requests with one click. That keeps it clear, even on busy evenings.
