12 ways to get more listeners for your internet radio station
Setting up a stream is the easy part. Finding and keeping listeners is the real work. These twelve tips help your station grow, without big budgets.
1. Work with regular shows
People listen to shows and DJs, not to a stream. A regular morning show or a Friday night dance mix gives listeners a reason to come back. Put your programme schedule clearly on your website.
2. Be recognisable
Use jingles with your station name, a clear logo and a consistent colour. Anyone who hears your station once should recognise it the next time.
3. Have a site that works on every phone
Most people listen on their phone. A site that loads fast, with a big play button and a visible "now playing", makes the difference. Read more in what makes a good website for your radio station.
4. Let listeners take part
Requests, a chat and shout-outs make listeners part of the show. People who take part listen longer and bring friends along. Tips in requests, chat and WhatsApp.
5. Let people know when you are live
Push notifications on the phone, a message in your Telegram or Discord group or a post on Facebook: let your regular listeners know their favourite DJ is starting. Automatic works best, so nobody forgets.
6. Make your DJs ambassadors
Every DJ has their own network. Give DJs their own profile page on your site with a photo and show times, so they can easily share it.
7. Be findable in Google
People search for "80s music radio" or "online radio with requests". Make sure your site has clear texts describing what you play, a good page title and your own domain name. See also your own domain name and https.
8. Register with radio directories and apps
Many websites and apps collect internet radio stations. Register your station there with your stream address, logo and a short description. That way new listeners find you where they are already looking.
9. Cooperate with other stations
Exchange DJs, do a joint broadcast or refer to each other. Stations with a similar audience are not competitors but partners.
10. Organise campaigns
A giveaway, a chart that listeners vote on or a special theme day gives people a reason to listen and spread the word.
11. Make sure the stream always works
Nothing drives listeners away as fast as a stream that stutters or goes silent. Make sure you have a good AutoDJ when nobody is live, a stable server and a backup stream if possible.
12. Measure what works
Look at your listener figures per hour and per show. Which shows attract the most listeners? When do people drop off? Use that information to improve your schedule.

Growing happens step by step. Pick two or three tips that suit your station, apply them consistently for a few months and then see what it brings.
